Geta sizing is typically vague and seemingly careless. In Japan many geta are sold in only one or two sizes, and there is no standard size system other than length in centimeters, which is not always given.
If you’re buying geta over the internet, there is no opportunity to try them on, so you’ll need to:
- Know the size of the geta. You may have to ask the seller by email for the length in cm.
- Be aware that some shops give the actual geta length, and others the size foot they fit. A geta length is a single number, the size they fit is usually given as a range, such as 25-27.
- Know your foot’s geta size. You can look it up in the following chart.
For instance, I wear US Men’s size 10. Looking up 10, you’ll see it overlaps geta sizes 25.5 and 27 cm. Either size fits me well.
Choose small if you want to be traditional, and large if you truly believe your foot shouldn’t hang over the back a little.
